If you work from home, being organized is very important. Whether you own a small business or you are a freelance writer, working in an orderly environment will make completing your job much easier. There are a variety of ways to make sure that you have an orderly home office and make the most of your office space.

If possible, create your own office space and make sure everyone else is aware that it is your work space. Designating work space limits your work area to a specific place and will help you to keep your work materials organized.

To create your work area, decide what you need to comfortably perform your job. Purchase a decent sized desk and comfortable chair. Make sure that you have the necessary tables and bookshelves for your books, printers, and computer supplies. You can easily create a very affordable office space by visiting a major retailer such as IKEA which offers quality furniture at a decent price.

After creating your office space it is necessary that you organize your desk. It is best if everything has a place. Make a quick run to a major office supply store and purchase desk organizers. You will be able to find everything from paper trays to small holders for pens, erasers and tacks and paper clips. Most desk organizer sets are relatively affordable and are very useful for keeping all of your belongings organized.

Most home offices require some form of telecommunications connection and it is best to have your business or work phone and cable services separate from your home connections. If you need a telephone for your home business it is best to have this set up in your office area so that you will not have to use your personal home line for business calls. You wouldn't want to miss an important call because the home phone is tied up. There are many discount packages for small businesses. Contact the telecommunications companies in your area to get an idea of how much a phone and/or internet service package will cost so that you can properly set up your home office. You might even find that a cell phone plan or VOIP service is more affordable and just as functional.

Keeping your home office organized requires your willingness to only use your home office space for work. Let others in your home know that you want to create an orderly working environment and that you would prefer that your designated space be only used by you for work. This will keep toys, school books and video games from ending up in your office space.

In addition, since you are working from home, try to make your home office comfortable and inviting. Add candles or a nice bouquet of flowers to your desk. If possible, place your desk near a window so that you can get a glimpse of nature when your work becomes a bit stressful. Working from home can be a great experience especially when you are organized!
