Ten Tips to Becoming Self-Employed ZjW5hJg

If you have ever dreamed of being self-employed, you have probably wondered what it takes to make the leap from an employee to working for yourself. It really isn't as difficult as you might think. Below are some tips to help you on the road to self-employment.

1. Buy and read Paul Hawkins "Growing a Business." He's the guy who created "The Whole Earth Catalog" and started Smith and Hawkins Gardening Supply.

2. Start thinking about yourself as a person who can be your own boss.

3. Look up movies, books and other entertainment about the self-employed when you aren’t reading how-to books.

4. You’ll find that your social circle will change as your interests change. People who were important to you will fade away, and new people will come into your life. People who talked about “someday” doing what you are now doing will be jealous or interested. Separate your true friends from those who can't handle the new you.

5. Don't quit your day job. Start small and don't go into debt in the beginning if you can avoid it.

6. Your present social circle may be your first customers. Even if you cut ties with old friends, do so without burning bridges. You never know who your next customer will be.

7. Find a mentor. Find someone who is retiring from the business that you want to start. More than likely this person would love to pass on his knowledge and help you to avoid mistakes. Your mentor will enjoy living vicariously through you and revisiting a part of his past.

8. Learn to save money and delay gratification. Be prepared to put in 50 to 60 hour work weeks; especially at the beginning.

9. When confronted with business opportunities (which are also always risks), look at the "up" side as well as the worst possible outcome. If you can live with the worst outcome and the upside is substantial enough, go for it.

10. Forget conventional wisdom and just do it. Sometimes the best decisions that we make are the ones that we make without thinking too much. This is because often we know more than we realize. Our gut is just telling us what our head already knows but hasn't yet pieced together.

If after implementing the above tips, you still aren't on the road to self-employment, it is time to take a step back and decide if you really want to work for yourself. If you don't have the drive, determination, or motivation to make it happen, it will never happen. Sometimes you just have to take a chance.
