Five Tips for Successful Telecommuting
The landscape of today's work world is rapidly changing. Companies are facing increased pressure to cut costs. Workers are facing long commutes and higher gas prices. Parents are challenged by both the need to earn income and the desire and responsibility to be in the home to care for their children. These factors have led to an increasing trend in telecommuting.
When employees work from home offices, employers benefit from increased retention and lower overhead. Employees benefit from increased flexibility and not having to commute. But the arrangement is not without its pitfalls.
Here are five tips to make a telecommuting arrangement run smoothly:
1. Respect your responsibilities. Working from home means just that: working. This is not your opportunity to throw in a load of laundry, pay your bills and start tonight's stew. Your employer has trusted you to perform your responsibilities without looking over your shoulder; it's up to you to honor that trust. Treat your work hours like you would if you were in the office.
2. Connection is key. Your internet access and phone service must be reliable. Do not rely on poaching your neighbor's wireless. Check your messages often, and if your connectivity goes down, let the office know as soon as possible.
3. Take a shower and get dressed every day. It's tempting for telecommuters to take business casual to a whole new level. After all, no one in the conference call can see that you're wearing pajama pants or will know that you haven't brushed your teeth. But taking the time to get ready for your day will help you get into a professional mindset and ultimately make you feel more productive and energetic.
4. Don't act like your employer has done you a favor, or project that you are being favored over traditional office employees. When you work from home, others can treat you as if you're receiving special privileges or not 100% part of the team. Don't stand for it. Your talents are worth paying for, and your employer isn't doing you a favor by putting your services to use. As long as you are giving your all and not dropping the ball, you shouldn't be afraid to run to the post office at lunch because missing a call might make you look unavailable.
5. Keep the lines of communication open. When you're working remotely, you may not feel in the loop with the broader picture. Or, you might not feel that your hard work and efforts are being recognized. Be honest with your direct boss. Ask to be kept in the loop, and also be sure he or she is aware of what you're working on.
These are just some tips to help you on the road to being a successful telecommuter. With lots of hard work and a little bit of self-control, there isn't any reason why you can't be as productive at home as in the office; perhaps even more.
