In a poor economy, it can be difficult to enjoy the finer things in life, such as going out to a fancy restaurant with your significant other. Consider the price of gas, movie tickets, dinner, drinks, etc., and you may find yourself postponing dates until your finances are better. But did you ever consider having a romantic and enjoyable night at home?

In this article you will find affordable and fun ideas to entertain a loved one without leaving the comfort of your own home. All you need is a little bit of imagination, some careful planning, and a babysitter!

Many people try to surprise their lovers by making a romantic dinner at home but this can be time consuming and even disastrous at times. It may be a better idea to order take-out or buy a ready cooked meal. If you go to your local supermarket you will find ready-made food from lasagna to rotisserie chicken to salads that you can put together.

It is all about the presentation, so make sure you lay out the food elegantly in nice china, light some candles, and have wine and two wine glasses ready on the table. Or, if you want to try something different, have a picnic. If the weather is less than comfortable outside, have it in your living room in front of the television.

For dessert you can have chocolate covered strawberries. Simply buy chocolate syrup and set it in a shallow bowl or plate and have strawberries laid out on the side. It is a delicious and easy-to-make treat!

You can go the easy route and rent a movie or you can do something a little more special. Move all the chairs and tables out of the way and create a miniature dance floor. If you don't know how to dance very well, a fun thing to do would be to rent a how-to DVD on salsa or swing dancing. You can even find DVDs like this at your local library.

Another activity that you may not have thought of is to take advantage of your kids' video game systems. The Nintendo Wii games, for example, include activities like bowling or baseball so you can explore your inner child while having fun. You can also play board games or sing karaoke.

There are so many things to do at home without spending more than you'd like. So, the next time your lover bugs you for a date, don't use "I don't feel like going out," or "we're tight on money" as an excuse. There are lots of options for planning a date at home that don't cost a penny. Make some plans to stay in and have an enjoyable, but frugal, evening!
