Ever wondered what you need to know to be a better salesperson in any field that you choose? When times are tough, being a salesperson is even harder than usual. Thankfully, there are a myriad of ways for you to get an edge over the competition.

Over-the-telephone salesperson

With telephone sales, it is extremely important that you speak clearly and always keep a pleasant tone. You want to connect with the people on the other end of the line and make them feel like they’ve known you for years.

You should ask them questions about their personal life to get them to open up and trust you. The more a potential client feels that they can trust you, the further away you get from the stigma of being a “salesperson.”

Physically-present salesperson

When selling in person, whether you’re selling products or services, you need to make sure that you always look professional.

First impressions are everything and you do not want to lose a sale because you looked sloppy. The old saying that "You never get a second chance at a first impression" is completely true in this field.

Key things to consider as a salesperson

1. Willpower

The main key to any sales position is persistence and determination. It can be rough starting out if you have never been in this type of environment before and have a shy personality.

You need to realize that you are doing your job and offering people something that they need or want. You are there to make their lives more enriched, while also earning a living.

2. Body language

Most people tend to view sales as a business transaction, and it is, but you also need to look at it as a social interaction. Word choices, gestures, and inflection in your voice are all things that can affect whether or not you make a sale.

3. Presentation

Be confident, and if you aren’t, act like you are! Consumers can pick up very quickly on whether or not you are confident and knowledgeable about the product or service you are trying to sell them.

Would you be willing to make a purchase from someone who had absolutely no idea what they were selling? Most probably not!

4. Pleasure

Another important fact that a lot of people in the sales industry forget, is to have fun! Yes, it is a job, but if you are not having fun, you are not going to be successful. You have a great opportunity to interact with so many different people!

Stay focused, keep your goals clear in mind, roll with the punches and just have fun! You will be successful!
